Born in Pajay, Isère, Bonnardel studied under Zacharie and later under JB Poncet at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he would later teach.
He exhibited in Lyon as early as 1890 and later in Paris, primarily painting figures, interiors, and still lifes of fruit.
