Large Gilded Rococo-style Console Table With Gray Marble – Late 19th Century

Large wall-mounted console table in carved and gilded wood in the Rococo style, dating from the late 19th century.

The richly curved and openwork panel beneath the top is decorated with lattice-like and interlaced motifs and culminates in the center with a sumptuous asymmetrical shell valve embellished with volutes and acanthus leaves. The sculpted side posts feature a refined combination of zoomorphic and figurative motifs typical of the fine cabinetmaking of the period: they are connected to the top by cherub heads (winged putti) and transform toward the lower section into fantastical bodies of heraldic dolphins with wide-open jaws, ending in curled feet. The four legs are joined by a scrolled crosspiece, centered by a rich, openwork foliated pediment. The piece is completed by its shaped top in veined gray marble.
