An Italian Pair Of Armchairs With Baluster-form Legs. Venice, 18th Century
Description
In richly carved walnut. The tall, squared backrests in the armchair (seggiolone) fashion, slightly raked and shaped along the upper profile. Sinuous, double-curved armrests terminating in elegant, pronounced scroll volutes, supported by baluster-turned uprights with block joints. Smooth underseat rails. Drop-turned front legs joined by a complex and scenic X-shaped stretcher, shaped with opposing volutes; the central junction is enriched with a pierced finial, finely carved with foliate and vegetal motifs in the Baroque taste. Squared plinth feet resting on stylized bun terminals. The seats and backrests are fully upholstered and covered in a golden-yellow silk damask fabric featuring large contrasting floral patterns, finished with matching trim.
