Jean Desprès, Tastevin, Silver-plated Metal, 20th Century

Small tastevin made of hammered silver-plated metal, with a circular handle adorned with a row of four beads at the junction with the bowl.

Jean Després (1889–1980) was a French goldsmith from a family of glassmakers. Trained at a very young age by a Parisian silversmith who was a friend of his father’s, he also took drawing lessons and frequented the Bateau-Lavoir, where he met Braque, Picasso, Modigliani, and others. During World War I, he was drafted as a mechanical draftsman for the air force, an experience that fostered his lifelong appreciation for mechanical forms and geometric aesthetics. In 1924, he opened a studio and shop in Avallon, his hometown, where he showcased highly modern pieces of goldsmithing and jewelry. He also exhibited regularly at the Salon and opened another store in Paris, frequented by a prestigious clientele that included Josephine Baker.
