Constant Le Breton, View Of Pont De Montvert, Watercolor, 20th Century
A landscape in ink and watercolor on paper depicting a lush, picturesque village crossed by a stream spanned by a stone bridge. A handwritten annotation at the bottom of the work indicates that this is a view of Pont de Montvert, a small town located in Occitanie.
Signed “Constant Le Breton” in the lower right corner.
Constant Le Breton (1895–1985) was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator who initially trained under a shop-front painter in his native Loire region. After being drafted during World War I, he moved to Paris’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, where he worked for theater set designers, illustrated books, and devoted himself to woodcut printing. Thanks to a grant from the Blumenthal Foundation, he gained recognition and broadened his repertoire, painting portraits as well as landscapes, interior scenes, and still lifes. Today, his works are included in the collections of several museums, including the Petit Palais, the Musée Carnavalet, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.
