Small Blue Ceramic Vase, 20th Century

In perfect condition, this small vase featuring tapered gadroons displays a range of blue tones; parts of the neck are lustered, creating an iridescent effect. This technique requires great skill, as it demands perfect control over the firing process. After the piece has already been fired, the potter applies a mixture of metal oxides and a binder, then fires the piece again at a low temperature (muffle firing) in a reducing atmosphere—meaning one deprived of oxygen. When mastered perfectly, this technique yields pearlescent effects or delicate iridescence. In this respect, the small vase represents a fine feat of craftsmanship.
