Monoxyle Lacemaker's Box – Velay Folk Art – 19th Century

Small carved wooden box made from a single piece of wood (monoxyle), likely originating from the Velay or Haute-Loire region and dating to the 19th century. The body of the box—comprising the base, back, and two sides—is carved from a single block of wood. It features rich carved ornamentation, including rosettes, stylized plant motifs, diamonds, geometric stars, chevrons, and sawtooth friezes. The front panel is adorned with a particularly distinctive openwork design. Both the front panel and the sliding mechanism are added elements, likely dating from an early restoration; the sliding panel itself has recently undergone careful refurbishment. It boasts a beautiful, aged patina. There are traces of past wood-boring insect activity, which is now stabilized. An interesting example of regional folk art and traditional wood carving.
