Gallé – Small Vase with Thistle Decoration, circa 1890–1900

Small Gallé glass vase of baluster form on a raised foot, decorated with stylised thistles. The vase features delicate shades of translucent green and opalescent white glass, with a subtly textured surface that beautifully captures the light. The thistle decoration, a motif particularly favoured by Émile Gallé, is enhanced with golden highlights and extends harmoniously around the body of the vase.

The history of the Gallé house dates back to the first half of the 19th century in Nancy. The family, initially active in the trade of crystal and porcelain, gradually developed an important glass-decorating business. Émile Gallé (1846–1904) took over the family business in 1877 and would profoundly transform the art of glassmaking through his technical research and passionate interest in nature.

From 1894 onwards, Gallé operated his own glassworks in Nancy, allowing his glass creations to be produced on site. He experimented with numerous techniques, including cameo glass, engraving, applied decoration, inclusions, patination and glass marquetry. His research notably led to the filing of several patents in 1898.

Botanical motifs, directly inspired by his observations of nature, occupy a central place in his work. The thistle appears in several Gallé creations preserved in French public collections, demonstrating the importance of this floral repertoire within his artistic production.

This piece belongs to the period of the full development of the École de Nancy, a major movement of Art Nouveau of which Émile Gallé was one of the founding figures and its first president in 1901. Production at the Gallé establishment continued after his death in 1904 under the direction of his widow, Henriette Gallé, until the glassmaking activities of the Établissements Gallé ceased in 1931.
