Regency-style console table with floral marquetry and gilded bronze, from the Napoleon III period

Elegant Regency-style console table from the Napoleon III period, made of exotic wood veneers and floral marquetry, richly adorned with chiseled and gilded bronze.

Its undulating band features a design of flowering branches set within panels edged with gilded bronze. The contrasts between the wood species and the interplay of grain patterns highlight the design of the flowers and foliage. In the center, a feminine mascaron stands out against a backdrop of volutes and foliage motifs.

The console rests on four curved legs, adorned at their bases with gilded bronze espagnolettes depicting female busts. Sculptural moldings follow the curves of the base down to the feet.

The legs are joined by a scalloped crossbar, inlaid with a latticework pattern punctuated by small flowers and highlighted by a gilded bronze border. Its design echoes the sinuous lines of the waistband and balances the composition.

A breccia marble top in warm tones crowns the piece. Its molded edge follows the contours of the piece and harmonizes with the wood’s hues.

This console table is part of a two-piece set whose marquetry features the same motifs but with the light and dark woods reversed. This interplay of positive and negative elements evokes the principle of part and counterpart, here expressed through wood marquetry. Each console table thus offers its own interpretation of the design while complementing the other.
