Large French Gilt-bronze And Sèvres-style Porcelain Jewelry Casket, Late 19th Century
Large French Gilt-Bronze and Sèvres-Style Porcelain Jewelry Casket, Late 19th Century
A large and highly decorative French jewelry casket crafted in finely cast and chased gilt bronze, with an elegant serpentine outline characteristic of luxury decorative objects produced during the second half of the 19th century.
Its richly ornamented body is inset with polychrome porcelain plaques on a turquoise-blue ground, in the manner of the Sèvres manufactory. The plaques are delicately painted with floral bouquets, pastoral attributes and charming putti, all framed by finely detailed gilt-bronze borders.
The triple-curved hinged cover is surmounted by a seated gilt-bronze putto surrounded by flowers. The two lateral sections are crowned with foliate bud finials. The elaborate gilt-bronze decoration includes beaded borders, acanthus leaves, floral garlands and suspended laurel swags. Two finely cast openwork handles complete the composition.
The casket rests on several ornamental gilt-bronze feet and opens to reveal a fully lined and padded green velvet interior.
French work in the Napoleon III style, second half of the 19th century.
