Antique Chinese Erotic Naked Ivory Medicine Lady, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century

A finely carved Chinese ivory “medicine lady,” Qing Dynasty, mid to late 19th century.

The reclining lady is depicted nude, resting gracefully on one arm, with her other hand placed across her body. The quality of the carving is particularly evident in the delicately modelled hands, individual fingers, bracelets and finely incised hair, which is gathered into an elegant bun.

Her tiny bound feet are especially interesting. Foot binding was associated with women of respectable and affluent families, suggesting that the figure represents a lady of bourgeois or higher social status.

Figures of this type are traditionally known as “medicine ladies” or “doctor’s ladies.” According to tradition, a female patient, for reasons of modesty, could indicate on such a figure the part of her body where she was experiencing pain or discomfort, allowing a physician to discuss her symptoms without requiring an intimate physical examination.

The ivory displays an attractive old patina. Particularly noticeable is the considerably darker colouring to the back of the figure, while the front is much lighter, consistent with prolonged exposure to light over many years.
