The workis attributed to Bernhard Keil, a painter of Danish origin whomoved to Italy in 1651 (Venice, Lombardy, Romagna, Rome),where he introduced a folk-inspired naturalism that would inspire thegenre scenes of the leading northern painters of the early18th century, including Crespi, Ceruti, Todeschini, and Amorosi. Keil’sbody of work is characterized by depictions offigures from the humblest social classes, often serving as a vehicle forallegorical meanings linked to the seasons, the senses, the elements,and the stages of human life. There are two otherversions of the painting on display that have appeared on the antique market: one at Pandolfini inFlorence on November 28, 2013, and the other at Coronari Auctions inBelgium on September 10, 2021.
