Gabriel Biessy, whose full name was Marie-Gabriel Biessy, was a French painter born on March 25, 1854, in Saint-Pierre-du-Mont, in the Landes region of France.
He began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under Félix Clément, then moved to Paris in 1879, where he studied in the studios of Carolus-Duran and Luc-Olivier Merson.
He first exhibited his portraits at the Paris Salon in 1882.
During his career, he travelled to countries such as the Netherlands, Portugal, Senegal and Egypt.
His work mainly included portraits, city landscapes, genre scenes and depictions of everyday life.
He regularly exhibited at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and received several awards.
In 1895, he became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
He received an honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle and a bronze medal in 1900.
In 1902, he was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.
From 1918, Gabriel Biessy taught as a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Cairo, before becoming its director.
He directed the school until 1927 and played an important role in art education in Egypt.
He was married to Marthe Gambier, with whom he had three children: Franz, Roland and Noëlle.
Several of his paintings depict his wife, who often served as his model.
Gabriel Biessy died on September 9, 1935, in Bourg-la-Reine, at the age of 81.
