Important 18th Century French Louis XV Mahogany And Burr Walnut Port Cabinet

Important French two-part buffet or display cabinet, known as a meuble de port, dating from the 18th century and designed in the Louis XV taste.

Of particularly monumental proportions, the cabinet is constructed principally in mahogany and is distinguished by the rich burr walnut panels decorating the lower doors. The upper section opens with two large glazed doors, allowing the display of porcelain, glassware or decorative objects, while the lower section provides generous enclosed storage.

The architecture of the piece is characteristic of the Louis XV period, with a strongly shaped cornice, flowing moulded frames, serpentine door outlines, curved lower apron and short cabriole legs. The pierced escutcheons further reinforce its rococo character.

The term meuble de port refers to furniture produced in the major French maritime centres during the 18th century, where imported exotic timbers such as mahogany were more readily available through overseas trade. These pieces were often made for wealthy merchants and substantial residences and are appreciated for the quality of their cabinetmaking, their imposing proportions and the richness of their timbers.

The contrast between the deep reddish-brown mahogany and the highly figured burr walnut panels gives this cabinet a particularly decorative presence. With a height exceeding three metres, it was clearly intended for a grand interior with generous ceiling height.
