Antoine Van den Kerckhove began participating in the Belgian triennial exhibitions at the 1872 Brussels Salon, where he submitted two plaster busts. At the 1878 Brussels Salon, his David Arming His Slingshot was hailed as an accurate and well-composed bust, distinguished by its square chisel work, in contrast to the mannered styleAt the 1881 Brussels Salon, he won one of the four gold medals awarded for his work Statue of Chapuis. He submitted his works to the General Colonial and Export Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1883 and to the 1885 World’s Fair in AntwerpStarting in 1890, Antoine Van den Kerckhove worked in Paris and also spent time in London. The bust was cast in Brussels and bears the mark of the bronze foundry. What is interesting is that the initials of his name appear before his artist’s name.
