FRENCH SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY — CIRCA 1750–1770. Portrait of a young girl. Pastel on paper, 18th century. The work displays remarkable pastel technique, particularly in the rendering of the skin tones. The face is built up using very fine, juxtaposed stippled strokes, creating extremely delicate modeling when viewed from a distance. This "dotted" style—seen in the work of certain 18th-century French pastellists—contrasts with the freer, more graphic treatment of the clothing. This technical characteristic links the work to pastellists active around the Académie de Saint-Luc in the mid-18th century, specifically the styles of Jacques-Charles Allais (c. 1704–1760) and Léon-Pascal Glain (1723–1788), both of whom were stylistically connected to the circle of Louis Vigée (1715–1767). Literature on Glain specifically notes his use of a "dotted" pastel technique similar to that of Allais. The color palette is particularly harmonious: pearly skin tones highlighted with pink, soft blue-grey shadows, the white of the collar, and the deep blue of the garment.
