Original Double-sided Drawing - Dance Of The Vestal Virgins And Antique Roman Furniture - 1770

Attributed to Jean-Guillaume Moitte, this remarkable double-sided drawing perfectly illustrates the interest of 18th-century French artists in Greco-Roman antiquity during the Italian Grand Tour.

The front side features an elegant allegorical composition depicting a circle of vestal virgins or ancient female figures dancing beneath a vast, theatrical drapery. The movement of the figures, the fluidity of the fabrics, and the delicacy of the wash demonstrate great academic mastery and a profoundly neoclassical sensibility. The scene evokes the ancient bas-reliefs and decorative elements studied in Rome by resident artists and travelers during the second half of the 18th century.

The reverse side features several studies of furniture and objects inspired by Roman antiquity: vases, incense burners, and decorative elements rendered as if they were actual archaeological drawings.
