Description:

This pair of two-light candelabra in chased and gilt bronze rises from a blued bronze shaft encircled by spiraling laurel branches, crowned with a flame-topped urn (pot-à-feu), an emblematic motif of the neoclassical repertoire symbolizing purity and victory. The foliate-capped arms terminate in gadrooned nozzles recalling the calyx of an open flower.

The circular gilt bronze base is girdled with a beaded frieze, a decorative device characteristic of the Louis XVI ornamental vocabulary. Made circa 1850-1870, this pair reflects the renewed interest in the Louis XVI style under the Second Empire, a period in which Parisian bronze-workers reinterpreted the original neoclassical models with great virtuosity.

Technique:

Chased bronze with double patina: blued bronze for the shaft, mercury-gilt bronze for the candle arms, the flame urn finial, the nozzles, and the beaded circular base.
