Pietà — The Virgin, Christ, And Mary Magdalene—c. 1840

Pietà — The Virgin Mary, Christ, and Mary Magdalene — Circa 1850

This Pietà scene—a moment suspended between the Descent from the Cross and the Entombment—brings together three figures.

On the right, the Virgin Mary, veiled in a white drape, supports the body of the dead Christ, whose head rests against her, his torso bare and his legs stretched out on the ground. On the left, kneeling, a female figure with her hair loose—presumably Mary Magdalene—wrings her hands in a gesture of grief as she leans toward Christ.

The technique combines pen and brown ink with a dark wash applied in broad strokes. Christ’s pale flesh stands out against a dark background, in a luminous tension reminiscent of the great Baroque painters—Guido Reni, Ribera, and the Bolognese school.
