Set Of 33 Hat Pins—various Shapes—19th–20th Centuries

Set of 33 hat pins in various shapes and colors, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
They were originally intended to hold veils and small headdresses in place. They became shorter in the 1840s.
Their golden age spanned from 1880 to 1910, coinciding with the fashion for voluminous hats and imposing buns. The pins grew longer, sometimes measuring 15 to 35 cm. By then, they served as fashion accessories as much as they did as weapons of self-defense.
Between 1908 and 1913, some countries imposed length restrictions to prevent accidents.
These pins come in various sizes, shapes, and materials, with gilded or silver-plated iron shanks and heads made of ceramic, glass, imitation materials, pearls, celluloid, etc.—see photos.
