A fine example of an interesting type of pointed Burgonet helmet with a flattened ergo pointing backwards, from Brescia, northern Italy, 16th century (circa 1560). The pointed ogival helmet is formed from a single piece of metal surmounted by a flattened ergo pointing backwards. The visor and neck guard are pointed, and the bronze quill holder has a leather motif. The rivets bordering the headband are each adorned with a brass rosette. The etched decoration, known as "Pisan style," consists of four medallions surmounted by a fleur-de-lis framed by caryatids. Two of the medallions depict a full-length female figure facing a column, while the other two depict the goddess Psyche. The visor, neck guard, and four bands dividing the helmet are decorated with a series of armor pieces, vases, etc. The helmet has undergone significant early restorations to the upper part. From the mid-16th century and Throughout the Renaissance, the Italian workshops in the Milan and Brescia region were major centers of arms production in Europe, boasting highly prestigious master gunsmiths.
