Original Double-sided Drawing—heroic Figures And Studies Of Ancient Ritual Objects

Double-sided drawing executed in pen and sepia wash, attributed to Jean-Guillaume Moitte, depicting on one side several figures inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity and, on the other, studies of ancient ceremonial and decorative objects.

The front side features a group of figures draped in the classical style, including warriors, mythological figures, and a bearded, horned figure evoking the world of Bacchus or satyrs. The hieratic poses, spears, shields, and drapery are reminiscent of Roman bas-reliefs and the sculptural models studied by Neoclassical artists in the 18th century.

The reverse side brings together several extremely refined studies of ancient objects: decorated quivers, ritual torches, and richly ornamented ceremonial items. These drawings attest to a genuine archaeological interest in ancient decorative arts and in the ornamental details observed during study trips to Italy.

Attributed to Jean-Guillaume Moitte, this sheet is fully in line with the “Return to Antiquity” movement that characterized the second half of the 18th century, fueled by the discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum.

A student of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and future winner of the Prix de Rome, Moitte spent several years in Italy studying ancient monuments, sculptures, and objects intended to enrich his future monumental compositions.

The double-sided nature of the sheet, along with the spontaneity of the lines, reinforce the lively and documentary quality of this study.

Good overall condition with slight signs of age, small creases, and subtle marginal soiling due to the age of the paper.
