Gilded Wooden Réaumur Barometer-thermometer, Louis XVI Period
Oval Réaumur barometer-thermometer made of gilded wood, molded and carved. The frame is adorned with friezes of water leaves and rows of pearls. It is topped by a pediment featuring ribbon-wrapped agricultural trophies and a basket of fruits and flowers. At the bottom is a design of leaves surrounded by a ribbon bow. The thermometer is annotated with notes on various temperatures to provide a tangible reference. The highest temperature corresponds to that of Syria. The dial is signed SORMANY, rue de l’arbre sec in Paris.
