A superb and elegant oil painting on wood depicting a forest landscape by Paul Charavel (1877–1961). A French painter best known for his numerous landscapes of the area around Saint-Tropez, he was particularly noted for his scenes of bathers and wooded landscapes. He paid constant homage to light. In 1896, Paul Charavel was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux before studying under Léon Bonnat and Albert Maignan at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After a stay in Spain in 1903—where the photographs he took in Ávila would come to be regarded as remarkable— he settled at the “Oustalet des pescadous,” a property near Saint-Tropez (which would later become the property of Henri Manguin), where he rubbed shoulders with Paul Signac, Henri Matisse, and Albert Marquet.
As for this painting, in the foreground we see figures lying on the ground in a clearing. A rolling landscape of southern France with characteristic pine trees and superb light. The colors are vivid and luminous; the painting is fresh and appealing. Signed in the lower right corner and presented in a period wooden frame with gilded stucco. A high-quality work in excellent condition.
