Pair Of "winged Lions" Andolers In Gilded Bronze, Louis XVI Style, Paris, Maison Beurdeley
A pair of finely chased and mercury-gilded bronze andirons, stamped “BY” for the Beurdeley firm. Made around 1860–1870, it is based on a prestigious model created in 1784 for the Grand Salon of the Château de Bellevue, commissioned by the sisters of Louis XVI.
Each andiron is adorned with a winged lion, a blue enameled sphere adorned with stars, and a covered vase with ram’s-head handles, embellished with garlands of flowers and fruit. The bases are decorated with cherubs in relief against a blue background.
Similar pieces are housed at the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles. A remarkable testament to the craftsmanship of Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley (1808–1882), a leading figure in 19th-century Parisian artistic bronze production.
