Robert Debiève (1925–2018) “pinède,” A Major Jacquard Tapestry, 1978

This Jacquard tapestry, woven in the “princess stitch” technique and titled *Pinède*, is a work by the artist Robert Debiève (1925–2018).
It was published in 1978 by the renowned textile art publisher Jean Laurent.
This is copy number 42 of a limited edition of 500 numbered copies.
The composition reflects the artist’s most sought-after and highly valued period, marked by a clear transition toward abstraction. The forest landscape gives way here to a remarkable graphic tension: the black, sinuous lines of the tree trunks structure the space in an almost geometric way, while the flat areas of color—a bold chartreuse green and a sunny orange—convey the intensity of the light filtering through the branches without striving for realism.

Condition and installation:
The piece is in excellent condition. The tapestry is sound, with no distortion, and the color palette has retained all of its original vibrancy and contrast. Note that the slight geometric distortions visible in the main photo are due to the angle of the shot.
The panel is ready for installation thanks to an original system of five hanging loops sewn into the top edge.
On the back, the fabric certificate of authenticity is fully preserved, including the edition number, the publisher’s stamp, and Robert Debiève’s handwritten signature in ink.

Robert DEBIÈVE (1925–2018)

Robert Debiève was a leading French painter and designer of the second half of the 20th century who developed a unique visual language at a very early stage, one deeply marked by graphic precision and the power of color.
A versatile artist emblematic of the modernist period, his talent was first expressed through industrial design and interior design. In the 1960s, he collaborated in innovative ways with renowned furniture manufacturers such as Minvielle and Cabanne, revitalizing the design of contemporary furniture by incorporating new materials. His sense of space and geometry also led him to design the interiors of the salons on large ocean liners as well as train cars.
Alongside his pictorial explorations inspired by nature—particularly the chromatic variations and light of the ponds of Provence—it was in the field of textile art that Robert Debiève achieved his greatest successes.
In particular, he created a series of designs for contemporary tapestries for the Aubusson workshops.
Initially characterized by poetic or figurative genre scenes—market scenes, seascapes, and underwater fauna—his style evolved dramatically over the decades. His most accomplished compositions—such as the forest and seascape prints published in the late 1970s by art publisher Jean Laurent—lean toward radical stylization. This gradual transition toward a lyrical and geometric abstraction—in which the black line structures powerful contrasts of pure colors—is now considered the most sought-after and iconic period of his career in the 20th-century art market.
