PERICLES PANTAZIS (1849–1884)

Acquired by the family of the current owner at that auction. - Private collection. Pericles Pantazis studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1861 to 1871 under Nikiforos Lytras. He continued his studies for one year in Munich and then moved to Marseille and Paris. In Paris, he studied under Gustave Courbet and Antoine Chintreuil. During this time, he discovered the work of Eugène Boudin, Johan Barthol Jongkind, and the Impressionists Manet, Camille Pissarro, and Degas. In 1873, with a letter of recommendation from Manet, he settled in Brussels. A prominent Greek figure, Jean Economou, who was particularly interested in his skills, commissioned a large number of paintings from the artist. In Belgium, Pantazis became a member of an artistic circle of university students called the Cercle de la pâte (meaning “Circle of Color”). He became close friends with the painter Guillaume Vogels and the sculptor Auguste Philippette, whose sister he married a few years later. In Brussels, he initially worked as an interior decorator for Guillaume Vogels before gaining recognition as an artist in his own right. In 1878, he represented Greece at the International Biennial in Paris. He died suddenly of chronic tuberculosis.
