An airbrush composition by the multifaceted artist Robert le Ricolais, dating from the late 1930s.
This painting features biomorphic structures reminiscent of plant capsules, organic forms, or the silhouettes of seeds.
Robert le Ricolais (1894–1977) divided his time between scientific research, poetry, and the visual arts. A close friend of architect Louis Kahn, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania and was always inspired by the geometry and structures of nature (seashells, radiolarians, bones) to inform both his architectural theories and his abstract works.
He was a true pioneer of spray painting (the precursor to the aerosol can used in street art), whether using a spray gun or an airbrush. During the 1930s, while working for Air Liquide, he developed air compressor systems that allowed him to apply paint in a mist-like manner and with very subtle, grainy gradations. His work is on display at the Nantes Museum of Art.
