The Battle Of Val Di Chiana. Scaled Sketch In Ink And Tempera, 14th Century.
Artist: Lippo Vanni
Ink and tempera sketch on parchment depicting the Battle of Val di Chiana. The large, celebrated fresco in the Sala del Mappamondo of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena is attributed to Lippo Vanni and dates to around 1336. This refined 14th-century sketch shows an early restoration on the upper section of the black background, while the painted area is original and in perfect condition. Although the attribution to Lippo Vanni remains unconfirmed, the period and pictorial quality are entirely consistent with his work. This sketch is one of the "Invisible Sketches" of Guidoriccio da Fogliano, discovered by chance inside two early 18th-century books. Dimensions: 20 x 63.5 cm.
