Belle époque Brooch In 18-karat Gold, Diamonds, And Hand-painted Enamel Depicting Athena
Belle Époque brooch in 18-karat gold, diamonds, and painted enamel depicting Athena
Circular brooch from the Belle Époque period, crafted in 18-karat gold and adorned with a painted enamel portrait depicting Athena, the goddess of wisdom and military strategy in Greek mythology.
Athena is depicted in profile against a dark background. The enamel work is particularly delicate, with precise painting of the face, hair, clothing, and various details of the composition.
The goddess wears an imposing warrior’s helmet, whose embossed ornaments, pointed elements, and wing-like motifs reinforce the character’s martial nature. The helmet is embellished with gold elements applied directly to the enamel and set with diamonds, creating a three-dimensional effect and closely linking the art of enamel work with that of jewelry making. Another diamond-set gold element also accentuates Athena’s shoulder.
The enamel portrait is entirely encircled by a line of diamonds, forming a uniform border around the composition.
The combination of painted enamel, 18-karat gold, applied jewelry elements, and diamonds gives this brooch a particularly refined character, in the style of Belle Époque historicist jewelry inspired by antiquity.
On the reverse, the brooch retains its long-pin fastening mechanism.
