Pair Of Large Bacchanalian Champagne Coolers By Simon Rosenau, Hanau - Silver
Pair of large bacchanalian champagne coolers by Simon Rosenau, Hanau - Solid silver 800 thousandths - Late XIXᵉ century
Exceptional pair of large champagne coolers in solid silver 800 thousandths made by silversmith Simon Rosenau in Hanau, one of Europe's most prestigious centers for the production of luxury goldsmiths at the end of the XIXᵉ century.
With their remarkable quality of casting and chasing, these imposing fresheners bear witness to the exceptional craftsmanship of the Hanau workshops, renowned for their historicist creations aimed at a demanding aristocratic and bourgeois clientele.
The bodies are entirely adorned with spectacular bacchanalian decor celebrating the world of Bacchus, god of wine, feasting and abundance. Fauns, putti, dancers and mythological characters evolve in extraordinarily richly animated scenes, treated in high relief with remarkable sculptural finesse. This festive, refined iconography evokes the bacchanalian revelry of antiquity and lends the ensemble a spectacular decorative presence.
.The side sockets feature majestic goat heads sculpted almost in the round, directly inspired by the Bacchus procession. The sides are enriched with plant garlands, bunches of grapes, Bacchic trophies, foliage and admirably chiseled rocaille ornaments. The ensemble rests on four elegant claw feet that further enhance the monumental character of these pieces.
With their particularly generous dimensions, these coolers were designed to accommodate the largest bottles of champagne. Their wide opening accommodates standard bottles as well as magnums and certain large reception formats, making them pieces destined for the grandest prestige tables, receptions and the most refined homes.
