Warwick bronze vase with a nuanced brown patina, signed by Ferdinand Barbedienne, mechanically cast by A. Colas, 19th century.
The monumental ancient marble vase on which our vase was modeled was discovered in 1771 in Emperor Hadrian’s villa in Rome by Gavin Hamilton. After meticulous restoration under the watchful eye of Piranesi, it was acquired by the Earl of Warwick (hence its name) and is currently housed in the prestigious Burrell Collection in Glasgow.
Thanks to its provenance, its Bacchic motifs, and its lines, this vase quickly became a benchmark of Roman antiquity, inspiring the most talented artists of the 19th century—notably Ferdinand Barbedienne, who signed our vase—with remarkable quality.
