High Middle Ages Head Carved From Marble, Italy, 14th Century

A beautiful Italian High Renaissance sculpture in carved white marble depicting the face of a young man rendered in high relief.
This lovely fragmentary head most certainly comes from a large high-relief group,  as seems to be indicated by the two small original recesses (located on either side of the sculpture, behind the hair bands) intended to hold two wrought-iron wall-mounting brackets...
The young man’s face is relaxed and serene; his large, almond-shaped eyes cast a gentle yet direct gaze at the viewer.
The material and style are consistent with Italian works from the early Gothic period, around the 13th and 14th centuries. The work suggests a northern Italian origin, perhaps Tuscany....
In good overall condition for its age, with a few chips and signs of wear but no repairs or restorations to the surface of the marble.
Presented on a base (made of Verona marble and patinated iron) certainly dating from the 1950s or 1960s.
