Bronze with a nuanced matte brown patina. Signed on the base. Kichinosuke Hiroi (1906–1986) was a sculptor from Niigata Prefecture (Nagaoka City). He studied sculpture at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakkō (Tokyo School of Fine Arts) between 1925 and 1930. His training was rooted in the tradition of modern Japanese sculpture that emerged from the Western academic teaching introduced during the Meiji era. He was a student of Fumio Asakura. His studio was lost during the war. He created several monumental works in his hometown during the post-war reconstruction period. The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) holds a sculpture of a dove (1946) with which our bronze can be compared (see photo at the end of the slideshow). An illustrated biography and a certificate will be provided to the purchaser.
