A PAIR OF PATINATED-BRONZE TAZZE WITH SNAKES AND GROTESQUE MASKS BY AUGUSTE-MAXIMILIEN DELAFONTAINE, MID-19TH CENTURY
Each gadrooned hemispherical bowl is flanked by a handle in the form of a naturalistic snake coiled along the rim; the interior base is decorated in relief with a grotesque mask. They rest on a circular patinated bronze pedestal, set upon a base formed by a white-veined green marble pilaster topped by a double square plinth. One example bears the stamped monogram "A.D." surmounted by a star on the base.

Maison Delafontaine was one of the most illustrious Parisian art foundries of the 19th century. Established in the late 18th century by Jean-Baptiste-Maximilien, the workshop achieved international renown under the direction of Auguste-Maximilien Delafontaine (1813–1892), who used the famous "A.D." stamp.
