Important Glazed Ceramic Animal Group: Guido Cacciapuoti’s Guinea Fowl, Barbotine, 1920

A beautiful and spectacular animal group in polychrome glazed ceramic, created by Guido Cacciapuoti (1892–1953), depicting two guinea fowl perched on a naturalistic mound.
The particularly lively composition features two guinea fowls
. The birds rest on a naturalistic base depicting a tree trunk and a carpet of leaves and acorns.
The piece as a whole attests to Cacciapuoti’s remarkable talent for animal sculpture: naturalistic observation, powerful forms, and expressive poses are combined with a high level of mastery in glazed ceramics.
Signed by Guido Cacciapuoti on the base. Italian work from the first half of the 20th century, likely from the 1920s–1930s.

Guido Cacciapuoti (Naples, 1892 – Milan, 1953) was one of the great Italian ceramic artists specializing in animal subjects of the first half of the 20th century. Born into a prominent family of ceramic artists, he specialized in animal depictions at a very early age and exhibited, notably, at the Venice Biennale in 1920.
His works are characterized by a masterful simplification of forms combined with a particularly sensitive observation of the animal. Several of his animal sculptures found their way into prestigious collections, notably those of Victor Emmanuel III and King George VI. (Treccani)
