Antique Japanese Silver Imperial Presentation Bonbon Box, Chrysanthemum Crest

A rare antique Japanese silver presentation box, made as an Imperial gift from either the Emperor or a member of the Japanese Imperial Household.

The removable cover bears the Imperial sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum crest. The body is finely decorated with cranes in flight and stylised pine branches, both powerful Japanese symbols of longevity, good fortune and enduring strength.

The box would originally have contained small bonbons or sweets and was secured with a silk cord threaded through the small holes in the four legs. Remarkably, traces of the original silk cord can still be seen.

The underside bears the maker’s mark.

This is one of three Japanese silver objects formerly belonging to a French diplomat.

I have not cleaned this little treasure; that pleasure will belong to its lucky purchaser.
