This sculpture was originally mounted as a kerosene lamp and was later converted to electric lighting.

Paul Bayard de la Vingtrie made his debut at the 1876 Salon and immediately won a first-class medal for the model of The Snake Charmer (Le Charmeur de serpent), the bronze version of which adorns Parc Monceau in Paris. This same statue earned him a third-class medal at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. He subsequently received several commissions from the State and the City of Paris, including the statue of the painter François Lemoine at the Paris Hôtel de Ville, the allegorical statue of Pandora at the Musée Galliera in Paris, the equestrian statue of the sculptor Coysevox in Lyon, and the funerary monument to Fournier in Nantes.
