Loet Vanderveen (1921–2015):
Born in 1921 in Rotterdam, Loet Vanderveen developed a deep fascination with animals from childhood, fueled by the proximity of his city’s zoo.
After fleeing the Netherlands during World War II and serving in the Royal Air Force, he pursued a career as a fashion designer before devoting himself to sculpture.
Settling in California in 1959, he drew inspiration from nature and his many travels around the world.
His animal sculptures, in bronze or ceramic, are distinguished by their elegant, streamlined forms, which seek to capture the essence of each animal rather than its details.
Internationally recognized as one of the great animal sculptors, he continued his work until his death in 2015, leaving behind a body of work deeply marked by his love of nature.
