Gilbert Méténier, Glassed Stoneware Vase With Ribbed Finish

An elegant, fluted vase made of glazed stoneware by Gilbert Méténier (1876–1957), son of the famous ceramist Louis Méténier, a leading figure in the Gannat ceramics tradition in the Allier department.

This piece captivates with its generously rounded silhouette, punctuated by a pattern of deep fluted ridges that accentuate the interplay of the glazes. The glaze, particularly well-executed, displays a palette of deep greens, golden browns, ambers, and shades of blue-green, with magnificent natural glaze runs characteristic of the studio’s finest works. The firing has produced remarkable effects of texture and light, giving the vase a presence that is as sculptural as it is decorative.

The simple cylindrical neck harmoniously balances the proportions, while the interior features a beautiful, warm brown glaze. The base bears an incised signature, “G. Méténier,” guaranteeing the authenticity of this piece from the first half of the 20th century.
