Robert Pougheon enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs in 1902, then the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1907 (introduced by Fernand Cormon), where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens, Albert Besnard, and Paul Baudoüin. He later enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, studied under Charles Lameire (1832–1910), and became friends with Jean Dupas. He began exhibiting at the Salon des artistes français in 1911.
He won the Prix de Rome in painting in 1914
It was during his stay at the Villa Medici, from 1919 to 1923, that his art adopted a geometric style that was later was compared to that of Tamara de Lempicka.
