19th Century French Terrestrial Globe By J. Lebègue & Cie, Paris

Artist: J. Lebègue
A highly decorative French terrestrial globe by J. Lebègue & Cie, Éditeurs, Paris, dating from the late 19th century. The globe retains its original printed paper gores with finely detailed geographical information and attractive green, ochre and blue coloration, now beautifully softened by age.

The maker’s cartouche is clearly visible and reads “J. Lebègue & Cie, Éditeurs, Paris – Globe Terrestre.” The globe is mounted on an exceptionally decorative cast metal tripod base, richly ornamented with sculpted masks, scrolling foliage and substantial paw feet. The elaborate historicist design of the stand gives the piece a particularly strong sculptural presence and makes it as much a decorative object as an educational instrument.

The globe displays a wonderfully aged surface, with rubbing, marks, discoloration and areas of wear consistent with its age and use. Rather than detracting from the piece, this time-worn patina gives it considerable character and authenticity. The globe rotates on its original support, which incorporates an adjustment screw.

A striking antique object for a library, study or collector’s interior, combining late 19th-century French cartography with an unusually ornate architectural base.
