Pen and sepia wash on paper, after Claude Thiénon (1772–1846) depicting a historical view of Cognac associated with the childhood of Francis I and the Templars’ residence
Titled, signed, and annotated by hand
Inscription: “View of a house in the town of Cognac where Francis I was raised; At the end of the street is a former residence of the Knights Templar”
François I, born at the Château de Cognac in 1494, spent his early childhood in the Charente town. The drawing features a bas-relief depicting a salamander (François I’s royal emblem).

A student of Jacques-Louis David, the leading figure of Neoclassicism, Pierre-Maximilien Delafontaine (1777–1860) exhibited at the Paris Salons between 1798 and 1802. In his drawings, he combines the precision of David’s academic line work with the documentary sensibility of the landscape artists and archaeologists of the Empire and the Restoration.

On view at the Galerie Courcelles Antiquités, 97 rue de Courcelles, in Paris’s 17th arrondissement.
