Magnificent andspectacular antique bronze vase, attributed to Japan, Meiji period,19th century, remarkable for the richness and quality of its decoration in veryhigh relief.
The vasefeatures an elegant ovoid shape with a widely flared neck, resting on acircular foot. Its surface is adorned with a naturalistic design of waves,clouds, and stylized motifs, dominated by an impressive, sinuous dragon inrelief, whose body winds around the neck and body of the vase.
The dragon,rendered with great precision, features a multitude of finelyexecuted details: scales, claws, whiskers, mane, and body movements,giving the piece remarkable depth and a trulysculptural character.
The workdemonstrates exceptionally meticulous work in bronze, with reliefsthat protrude very sharply from the surface and numerous areas of re-chiseling. Thebeautiful antique dark brown patina, with golden and greenish hues,particularly highlights the different levels of the decoration.
The piece as a whole hasa remarkable presence and is a fine example of late 19th-century Japanesebronze, in the tradition of high-quality Japanese productionsintended primarily for the Western market.
