In very fine condition. Complete with its 40 fold-out plates as inserts, drawn by Carassi and engraved by Henriquez, depicting battle plans, sieges, and fortifications. The author was a member of the Royal Academies of Sciences and Letters in Berlin and Nancy. He was also Lieutenant General of the King’s Armies, Commander of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, the King’s governor of Fort Scarpe, and former Inspector General of Cavalry and Dragoons. Turpin de Crissé was one of the great military figures of his time; having joined the army at a very young age, he became captain of a company as early as 1734. According to Voltaire, he was “the only one worthy of being compared to Turenne.” Turpin de Crissé used his free time to refine his military knowledge through study and published four books on military strategy. He was widely read and highly regarded. Caesar’s Commentaries is the author’s final work and is rich in notes and clarifications. This edition is a tribute to the great strategist and military leader that was Julius Caesar.
