Jules De Vignon – Portrait Of A Young Woman, 1858 – Oil On Canvas, 19th-century French Painting

Artist: Jules De Vignon (1833/1861)

Elegantportrait of a young woman painted in 1858 by Jules de Vignon, a French painterborn in Belfort and who died in Paris. A student of Léon Cogniet at the École des Beaux-Arts,Vignon became known in particular as a portraitist and painter ofhistorical scenes. He exhibited regularly at the Salon beginning in 1833 and received athird-class medal in 1847, followed by another award in 1861.Several of his works are now housed in Frenchpublic collections.

The model, witha luminous complexion, is depicted in a pose that is both natural andrefined. Her direct, slightly melancholic gaze lends the portrait aparticularly captivating presence. Her brown hair, carefully styledin curls around her face, frames her delicately defined features.

The youngwoman wears a loose-fitting dark red dress, partially covered by an elegantwhite drape that reveals her shoulders. The contrast between the deep redof the dress, the dazzling whiteness of the fabric, and the warm tones ofher complexion subtly enlivens the composition. The hand resting on her chest andthe other resting on her garment accentuate the grace and simplicity of the pose.

The background, rendered in a range of browns and grays, evokes a simple interior adornedwith drapery. This neutrality allows all attention to be focused on thesubject and highlights the quality of the portraitist’s work.

The paintingis distinguished by its precise and meticulous execution, particularly in the rendering of theface, skin tones, and fabrics. The rendering of the flesh, delicatelymodeled by light, as well as the folds of the drapery, attest to the care takenin its execution.

The work issigned and dated “Jules de Vignon 1858” in the lower right corner.

It isset in a large carved and gilded wooden frame decorated with foliageand plant motifs, which is particularly decorative and in harmony with thepainting.

A workrepresentative of mid-19th-century portraiture, captivating forits elegance, the finesse of its execution, and the model’s very intimate presence.
