Carved, Single-piece Walking Stick With Animal And Figure Motifs – Snake And Dog's Head –
A rare and unique carved monoxyl walking stick, entirely carved from a single piece of wood and richly adorned with relief and engraved motifs.
The shaft, 85 cm long, features a continuous design enlivened by a carved snake coiled in a spiral around the wood.
It is adorned with numerous subjects: insects, birds on branches, a cat, a large wading bird, figures armed with swords and shields, as well as a male head in profile wearing a helmet.
The handle is particularly remarkable, carved in the shape of a dog’s head, with an elongated muzzle, ear, and finely incised eye.
The piece as a whole is a testament to remarkable folk monoxyl carving, which is at once naive, decorative, and highly expressive.
Beautiful antique patina, with wear and minor imperfections consistent with its age.
Folk art, likely European, possibly French.
Late 19th – early 20th century, circa 1900.
