Paul Urtin (1874–1962) Interior Scene: A Living Room Oil On Panel

Artist: Paul Urtin

This oil on panel, measuring 21 x 26 cm (viewing area), is a characteristic work by the French painter Paul François Marie Urtin (1874–1962). Representative of his work from the first half of the 20th century—dated circa 1920—it illustrates the artist’s favorite theme: interior scenes focused on the study of light and perspective.

The composition centers on a parlor furnished with a chest of drawers topped by a trumeau, a cabriolet armchair, and Louis XV- or Louis XVI-style chairs. The painter’s work focuses on the backlighting effects created by the tall open window on the left, whose light reflects off a waxed floor with reddish hues and an Oriental rug in the foreground. The brushwork is fluid, inspired by Impressionism, prioritizing atmosphere and the play of light over strict geometric details.

Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under Jean-Baptiste Castex, and later in Paris, Paul Urtin regularly exhibited his interior scenes at the Salon des Artistes Français as well as at the Salon des Indépendants beginning in 1908. His work is now listed in major reference dictionaries, notably the Bénézit, and several of his works are part of French collections, such as those at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris and the Paul-Dini Museum in Villefranche-sur-Saône.

The work is in good original condition. It is sold in its period frame made of carved, stuccoed, and patinated wood, bringing the total dimensions to 40.5 cm x 45.5 cm.
