Pen-and-ink Drawing In Gray Ink, Neoclassical, Religious Theme, Three Men In A Boat.
An interesting neoclassical drawing, circa 1800–1810, on laid paper. Three men are on a boat, heading to the right. The youngest is handling the oar, which rests on a very distinctive support. Beautiful, highly expressive faces with vigorous features and somewhat tense expressions. Fine studies of drapery in the clothing and of anatomy—legs, faces, hands, and feet.
Probably an illustration of a passage from the Bible, or perhaps a mythological scene.
Italy, early 19th century.
On the back of the drawing are annotations in Italian, I believe, regarding framing.
