St. Sebastian, Painted And Gilded Wood, 18th Century
A beautiful carved, painted, and gilded wooden depiction of St. Sebastian.
His body, finished to resemble terra cotta, along with his gilded loincloth and the base to which he is attached, depicts the torture of sagitation (the arrows have been broken off).
A native of Gaul, our saint lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries in the regions of France and Italy and was enlisted in Diocletian’s army.
As commander of the Praetorian Guard, he converted to Christianity and was subjected to the torture of sagitation (arrows) before being beaten with sticks.
Good overall condition.
